OpenStatus alternative: Vigil
Updated · prices checked September 2026
Teams look for an OpenStatus alternative when 20 monitors for $30 is not enough, or when a password-protected status page means a $100/month add-on. Vigil Pro is $49/month for 200 monitors, 10 private status pages with custom domains and 15 servers. If checks from 28 public regions matter most, OpenStatus is the better fit.

What OpenStatus does well
- Checks from up to 28 public regions with 30-second intervals on Pro.
- Open-source code on GitHub, a strong developer focus and free tools.
- Unlimited team members on paid plans.
Where Vigil is ahead
Limits of OpenStatus that Vigil does not have:
- Small monitor counts for the price: 20 monitors for $30/month, 50 for $100/month.
- Restricted status pages are add-ons: email authentication $100/month, white label $300/month.
- No server metrics, logs, error tracking, Kubernetes or RUM.
When to pick OpenStatus instead
Pick OpenStatus if multi-region latency from up to 28 public locations is the point, if you want open-source code you can read, or if 30-second checks are a requirement.
What Vigil does not do
- Browser checks use a short line-by-line script run in headless Chromium (with screenshots), not full Playwright test code kept in git.
- No SMS or phone-call alerting on the hosted service (the self-hosted edition can page by SMS and call through your own Twilio account); hosted alerts go to chat apps, phone push, email, webhooks and ticketing tools.
- On-call is simple: rotations, overrides, escalation and acknowledgements, without the scheduling depth of PagerDuty or incident.io.
- Vigil's own APM SDKs are Python and Node; other languages send traces through any OpenTelemetry SDK over OTLP. There is no profiling, and it is not a substitute for a full APM suite.
- Checks run from Vigil's servers plus private locations you host; there is no menu of dozens of public regions.
Moving from OpenStatus to Vigil
1. Export what you have
List your OpenStatus monitors (their API or UI export). You need a name, URL or host, interval and the expected status or keyword for each.
2. Apply as code
Write them as Vigil's YAML and apply with PUT /api/v1/config; the same endpoint exports everything back, so monitors can live in git. Or create them one by one through the REST API (monitors, incidents, maintenance, deploy markers).
3. Reconnect alerts
Add Telegram, Slack, Discord, Teams, ntfy, Pushover, email or webhook channels; set escalation to a second channel set. Point your cron jobs at the new heartbeat URLs and install the server agent with one command.
Run both side by side during the trial: Vigil's alert ingestion accepts Alertmanager and Grafana-style webhooks, so existing alerts can appear on a Vigil status page while you move over.
Frequently asked
Does Vigil check from many regions?
Vigil checks from its own servers and confirms each failure before alerting; you can add private locations (1 on Free and Starter, 2 on Pro, 10 on Business) inside your network or in other regions. It does not offer a menu of 28 public regions.
How much do private status pages cost on Vigil?
Nothing extra. Pages are private by default on every plan, with password or signed private-link access and a custom domain with automatic HTTPS.
Is Vigil open source?
No. Vigil is hosted, with a $149/month self-hosted edition for your own server or an air-gapped network.
How do I move my monitors?
Write them as Vigil YAML (name, url, interval, assertions) and apply with PUT /api/v1/config, or create them through the REST API.
Ready to leave OpenStatus?
Start free: every new account gets 14 days of Pro, no card. When the trial ends the account stays on Free (20 monitors) unless you choose a plan, and everything you set up stays.
