Vigil vs GlitchTip

What GlitchTip does well
- Open source and self-hostable, and much lighter to run than self-hosted Sentry.
- Works with Sentry client SDKs, so switching is a DSN change.
- Simple uptime monitoring and heartbeat-style checks built in.
- Low, flat hosted prices with unlimited team members.
Where Vigil is ahead
Limits of GlitchTip that Vigil does not have:
- Uptime is basic; there are no server metrics, logs, Kubernetes or RUM.
- No private status pages, no escalation or on-call.
- Vigil takes the same Sentry SDKs and adds heartbeats with cron schedules, servers, logs and private status pages on one plan.
When to pick GlitchTip instead
Pick GlitchTip if you want an open-source error tracker you can self-host for free, or the cheapest hosted Sentry-compatible option for errors alone. It is a good, focused project.
What Vigil does not do
- Browser checks use a short line-by-line script run in headless Chromium (with screenshots), not full Playwright test code kept in git.
- No SMS or phone-call alerting on the hosted service (the self-hosted edition can page by SMS and call through your own Twilio account); hosted alerts go to chat apps, phone push, email, webhooks and ticketing tools.
- On-call is simple: rotations, overrides, escalation and acknowledgements, without the scheduling depth of PagerDuty or incident.io.
- Vigil's own APM SDKs are Python and Node; other languages send traces through any OpenTelemetry SDK over OTLP. There is no profiling, and it is not a substitute for a full APM suite.
- Checks run from Vigil's servers plus private locations you host; there is no menu of dozens of public regions.
Moving from GlitchTip to Vigil
1. Create a project
In Vigil, open Errors and create a project per app to get a DSN.
2. Swap the DSN
Replace the GlitchTip DSN in your Sentry SDK config. No other code changes.
3. Recreate checks
Add your GlitchTip uptime checks as Vigil monitors (YAML via PUT /api/v1/config or the REST API) and turn scheduled pings into heartbeats with a cron expression and timezone.
Run both side by side during the trial: Vigil's alert ingestion accepts Alertmanager and Grafana-style webhooks, so existing alerts can appear on a Vigil status page while you move over.
Frequently asked
Is Vigil open source like GlitchTip?
No. Vigil is a hosted product with a $149/month self-hosted edition (Business limits, one-line installer, signed releases, works air-gapped). GlitchTip is open source and free to self-host.
Can I move from GlitchTip without changing code?
Yes. Both accept Sentry SDK events, so you create a project in Vigil and replace the DSN. Past issues stay in GlitchTip; new events group in Vigil from the first one.
How much error volume does Vigil include?
1,000 events a day on Free, 20,000 a day on Starter ($19), 200,000 on Pro ($49) and 2 million on Business ($149). GlitchTip counts per month: 1,000 free, 100k for $15.
Does Vigil have performance monitoring?
Yes, lightly: Vigil's Python and Node SDKs, or any OpenTelemetry SDK over OTLP, give endpoint latency, error rates, stored traces and a service map. Neither Vigil nor GlitchTip is a full APM.
