Vigil vs Sentry

Updated · prices checked September 2026

Sentry is the best error tracker available and Vigil does not try to match its depth: no session replay, no profiling, no suspect commits. What Vigil offers is Sentry-SDK compatibility inside a monitoring product: point your existing SDK's DSN at Vigil and get grouped issues with stack traces next to uptime, heartbeats, servers, logs and a private status page, from $19/month flat.

Small-team estimate uses public list prices and the cheapest tier that covers 3 servers, 50 monitors at 1-minute intervals and 5 people. Where a vendor meters by run, GB or hour we show the arithmetic so you can redo it with your own numbers.

What Sentry does well

  • The deepest error tracking there is: SDKs for nearly every language and framework, source maps, suspect commits, ownership rules, release health.
  • Session replay, performance tracing, profiling and logs linked to each error.
  • Unlimited users from the $26 Team plan.
  • A self-hosted edition exists for teams that want the full product on their own servers, though it is a large multi-service stack to operate.

Where Vigil is ahead

Limits of Sentry that Vigil does not have:

  • Uptime is an add-on ($1 per uptime alert after the first); 50 monitors adds about $49/month. There are no server metrics, Kubernetes health or customer status pages.
  • Cron monitors are billed per monitor ($0.78 after the first) rather than included.
  • Event quotas are prepaid; spikes beyond them mean dropped events or pay-as-you-go spend.
  • Vigil puts errors next to uptime, heartbeats, servers, logs and a private status page on one flat plan, and takes the same Sentry SDKs.

When to pick Sentry instead

Pick Sentry if error tracking is your main tool and you use its depth: session replay, profiling, performance tracing across many services, suspect commits, code owners and release health. Its SDKs and issue workflow are the reference everyone else, Vigil included, copies.

What Vigil does not do

  • Browser checks use a short line-by-line script run in headless Chromium (with screenshots), not full Playwright test code kept in git.
  • No SMS or phone-call alerting on the hosted service (the self-hosted edition can page by SMS and call through your own Twilio account); hosted alerts go to chat apps, phone push, email, webhooks and ticketing tools.
  • On-call is simple: rotations, overrides, escalation and acknowledgements, without the scheduling depth of PagerDuty or incident.io.
  • Vigil's own APM SDKs are Python and Node; other languages send traces through any OpenTelemetry SDK over OTLP. There is no profiling, and it is not a substitute for a full APM suite.
  • Checks run from Vigil's servers plus private locations you host; there is no menu of dozens of public regions.
Switching

Moving from Sentry to Vigil

Start free

1. Create a project

In Vigil, open Errors and create a project for each app. Each project gets its own DSN.

2. Swap the DSN

Replace the Sentry DSN in your SDK config (usually one environment variable). Keep the same SDK, release names and environments; issues start grouping on the first event.

3. Add the rest

Set alert channels (Telegram, Slack, Discord, email, webhooks), add uptime and heartbeat monitors for the same app, and put them on a status page.

Run both side by side during the trial: Vigil's alert ingestion accepts Alertmanager and Grafana-style webhooks, so existing alerts can appear on a Vigil status page while you move over.

Frequently asked

Can I use my existing Sentry SDK with Vigil?

Yes. Create a project in Vigil (/app/errors) and put its DSN in your SDK's init call. Vigil accepts the Sentry envelope and store endpoints, gzip and browser CORS, so any official Sentry SDK works without code changes.

What does Sentry do that Vigil does not?

Session replay, profiling, deep distributed tracing across many languages, suspect commits, code owners, source-map management at Sentry's level and a far larger integration catalogue. Vigil groups issues with stack traces, breadcrumbs, users and releases, and alerts on new issues, regressions and spikes.

How many errors does Vigil accept?

1,000 events a day on Free, 20,000 on Starter ($19), 200,000 on Pro ($49) and 2 million on Business ($149), with 1 / 3 / 15 / 100 projects. Add-on packs of +100k events a day cost $5. There is no overage bill.

Can I run both?

Yes. Many SDKs can only send to one DSN at a time, so the simplest split is by project: keep your main app on Sentry and send smaller services, workers or side projects to Vigil, while Vigil handles uptime, heartbeats and the status page.
