Why am I not getting Vigil alerts?
Most missing alerts have one of five causes: the channel isn't ticked on the monitor, the channel itself is broken (the test fails), the monitor was muted or inside a maintenance window, the failure didn't last for 2 checks in a row, or the email went to spam. The monitor's page shows what happened to every alert.
1. Read the delivery status first
Open the monitor. Under recent alerts, every alert lists each channel as sent, failed or skipped. Hover a failed entry to see the error the service returned. Skipped means the alert was held by a mute, a maintenance window or a dependency. If there is no alert at all, the monitor never went down (see step 4).
2. Check the channel is attached to the monitor
Edit the monitor and look at Send alerts to. Only ticked channels get its alerts. With nothing ticked, alerts go by email to the workspace owner's address. Creating a channel doesn't attach it to existing monitors.
3. Press Send test on the channel
On Channels, press Send test. If the test doesn't arrive, fix the channel before anything else. For Telegram, the chat ID must be the numeric chat.id from https://api.telegram.org/bot<token>/getUpdates (negative for groups), and you must have sent your bot a message first (or added it to the group). Telegram's "chat not found" error means one of those is wrong.
4. Know when a monitor counts as down
A monitor is marked down after 2 failed checks in a row, so a one-check blip never alerts. With Re-check after a failure on (the default), a timeout or connection error is retried after 12 seconds before it counts. A 5-minute check therefore needs an outage of several minutes before you hear about it.
5. Rule out mutes, maintenance and dependencies
A muted monitor records alerts but delivers none until the mute ends. While a maintenance window is active, nothing is sent, and a monitor that went down inside the window doesn't alert when the window ends. If a monitor depends on another monitor that is already down, its down alert is suppressed because the root cause has alerted. A monitor that changes state 4 or more times in 30 minutes sends one "flapping" alert instead of many.
6. Email: check spam
Alert subjects start with [Vigil]. Search your spam folder for it and mark the message as not spam. An unconfirmed account address doesn't stop alerts; it only limits you to 3 monitors and blocks invitations until you confirm it.
