Why does Vigil say my site is down when it works for me?
Vigil saw something different from you: its hosted checks run from one location, in Germany, so a firewall, bot protection, geo-blocking or a regional network problem can fail there while your browser works. Open the failed check to see exactly what came back, then allow-list the checker or run the check from a private location near your users.
1. Read the evidence
Open the monitor and the failed check. It keeps the status code, error type, timings, selected headers and the first 4 KB of the body. A 403 or 503 with a challenge page usually means bot protection; a timeout or connection error points at the network or a firewall.
2. Know the rules a check follows
An uptime check fails on any status of 400 or above, or no answer within 20 seconds. It follows up to five redirects, so a redirect to a login page that returns an error fails too. A monitor is marked down after 2 failed checks in a row. With Re-check after a failure on (the default), timeouts and connection, DNS or TLS errors are retried after 12 seconds before they count. Press Check now on the monitor to test again.
3. Allow-list the checker
Hosted checks come from 89.167.40.190; the same address is shown under Egress IP in Settings. Requests carry a User-Agent containing VigilBot/1.0. Allow either in your firewall, WAF or bot protection rules, and make sure visitors from Germany aren't geo-blocked.
4. Be clear about locations
There is one hosted check location. Vigil does not vote across several regions, so a network problem between Germany and your server can still fail a check. The confirmation rules above filter one-off blips, not a sustained regional problem.
5. Check from your own network or region
A private location is a small agent you run on any Linux, macOS or Windows machine with Python 3.8+ and outbound HTTPS, for example a server in India or inside your VPN. Free includes 1. Choose it under Check from on the monitor, and that monitor is checked from there instead of Germany.
